Surfer chicks!

Hello again from my happy place!
I've been distracted from card making recently, concentrating on knitting winter woollies for my grandchildren, and sewing dolls clothes for a baby doll we've got for our 2 and a half year old granddaughter for next Christmas.  Yes, I know it's only the 1st of June today, but we'll soon be off travelling for a few months so I need to be "Christmas-prepared" well in advance!
However, I have made a few commissions that turned out happily!  I enjoyed making these cards, the 2 surfer girls set at Mangawhai beach, for 2 sisters whose Mum gave me the colours of their surfboards and their hair.
The other card was for a special 11 year old's birthday, set at the wharf at Port Albert, where they live and where he goes fishing with his older brother and their labrador.  As with a lot of the cards I sell, these will be put into frames.
I love these challenges and the creative process involved to get them "just right".  And yes, it takes ages, and no, I don't charge nearly enough, but the fun of choosing the right fabric or textile scrap and colour combination is payment enough for me.  It may not feed my belly but it certainly feeds my soul!

Inspiration on my doorstep

Yes, this is only a few minutes away where we swim every day and where I get inspiration for my cards, Mangawhai, 90 minutes North of Auckland.  Aren't I blessed?

Where do I get my ideas?

My market customers often ask where I get my ideas from, and what makes me want to make such fiddly little things!  As my 6 year old grandson said to me recently, Grandma, I'm glad you have such a good imagination because it makes boring days so much more interesting!  Bless his little heart, but true I suppose.  I have a number of friends who quilt, and they kindly give me all their little scraps that would normally be thrown away.  I also have my own fabric stash from many years of sewing, and was a sample designer for an online ribbon and embellishment shop, so they sent me all sorts of wonderful things from their ranges to play with and inspire their customers.  It was heaven!  Even the smallest bits that I saved are now coming in useful.  I get inspiration daily from my surroundings where we live at the coast, and of course the Internet as well.   I do the bigger designs on my trusty 47 year old little Elna sewing machine, and add the details by hand.  I find sewing very relaxing and therapeutic, and the fact that I can sell some cards or give them away as gift packs to friends, is a bonus!  Happy me 😊!
